Fred Wildgust Questions to Council 14th May 2009

13th May 2009

Questions to Leader

Is the Leader of the Council aware that the Food Standards Agency recommended guidelines for food sampling is that 2.5 samples should be taken per 1000 head of population per annum?

Can the Leader assure the residents of Torfaen and members present that the enforced Trading Standards departmental budget cut of 1-5% will not have a detrimental affect on public safety and implementation of legislation?  The budget cut has resulted in a reduction in  Analysis Fees (code 3473) from £15K to £7.5K for the period 2009/10. The direct impact of this is that the number of samples taken per year within the borough will be forced to be reduced from 240 to approximately 110, which is less that 1.2 samples per 1000 head of population.

Does the Leader not feel that public health  and safety should be considered a priority and the budget revised to allow for increased sample analysis?

Question to Deputy Mayor

I have been informed by a Bridgend County Council Officer that in your capacity of Deputy Mayor you recently visited Bridgend County Council and had a guided tour of the Council Chambers.  I was disconcerted to find that this engagement has not been listed in the official engagement list for the month of April. Will the Deputy Mayor explain why this is the case and further to this,  explain to members present about the council meeting recording technology that is installed  within the council chambers and how is used?

Question to Executive Member Regeneration

In light of the fact that Greenmeadow Farm had a very successful  May Bank Holiday weekend and £6200 in income, yet still failed to meet its basic running costs.  Does the Executive Member not feel that to ensure best value for the residents of Torfaen there should be a review of the farms running costs to ensure financial viability and financial probity? Does he not agree that the farm should become a charitable trust in its own right, as a means of protecting the farms role in the borough and to protect the council from an ongoing financial burden?
